How great there’s such a high demand to see Noam Chomsky talk tonight–including those of you who may disagree with him!
Noam Chomsky is slated to Speak on “Policy and the Media Prism” at the Curtis M. Phillips, M.D. Center for the Performing Arts. (Also known as “the Performing Arts Center.)
There will also be a large sound system and screen showing the talk live outside the Phillips Center for people who can’t make it in. Tickets ARE sold out.
Noam Chomsky is brought to the Gainesville community solely by the Civic Media Center. Consider donating to help offset the cost of promoting this, etc.
Chomsky received his Ph.D in Linguistics in 1955 from the University of Pennsylvania (he’s a native of Pennsylvania). He was a Junior Fellow of the Harvard University Society of Fellows from 1951 to 1955.
The professor/author’s work has had a profound and lasting influence on many if not all cognitive sciences.
In 1955, Chomsky joined the staff of MIT and was appointed full professor in 1961. Fifteen years later, in 1976, he was appointed Institute Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy. Since then, he has received multiple awards including the Sydney Peace Prize and the Erich Fromm Prize and numerous honorary degrees from universities around the world.
Chomsky writes and speaks frequently on a variety of social and political issues. He advocates popular struggle for greater democracy and he has authored more than 100 books (!!!), which include include Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media (with Edward Herman), Pirates and Emperors: International Terrorism in the Real World, The Prosperous Few and the Restless Many (with David Barsamian), and Hegemony or Survival: America’s Quest for Global Dominance.
Professor Chomsky is an advocate for free speech and equality, and has spoken out against U.S. foreign policy and the mainstream media.
The last time Noam Chomsky visited Gainesville, he was brought by the Civic Media Center to celebrate their 10th anniversary. Happily, the CMC is still standing strong and serves as Gainesville’s own library of the independent and non-corporate press and community organizing space.
The CMC is now celebrating their 20th anniversary with Chomsky’s return to Gainesville.
